Help is Just a Phone Call Away

By Bishop Joseph Coffey, Archdiocese for the Military, USA

A young woman finds out that she is expecting a child. This is not the joyful, long anticipated wonderful news that it is for many women around the world. This is very upsetting news. She is not married. She is no longer even seeing her boyfriend. She has no job. She has very little money. Her parents will be so angry, upset, and disappointed in her. And the whole world, it seems, is in turmoil with a worldwide pandemic. She is scared and doesn’t know what to do.

For thousands of years, people in distress have turned to God in prayer.  In Psalm 86 we hear these comforting words: “Incline your ear O Lord and answer me for I am poor and oppressed.” And in Proverbs 3: 5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight.”

She is given a great gift, an answer to her fervent prayers. A friend from school, her best friend, the only one she could let know her secret, comforts her and gives her the number to Gabriel Network. The young woman has questions, many questions. She doesn’t know how she can tell her parents. How will she pay for her visits to the doctor, for baby clothes, diapers, and formula, What if she gets kicked out of her home? What should she do? What will happen to her and her baby? So many questions, so much fear. How can she face all this alone?

She takes a deep breath and dials. A calm, bright voice answers.  The voice encourages her, and assures her that Gabriel Network is there for her.  She won’t go through this alone.  She doesn’t need to be afraid anymore.  Together, they take the first step towards hope.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you for the 25 years of the Gabriel Network. So many women who needed help, compassion, and love. Bless the many people who have made this beautiful ministry a lifeline for women who faced an unplanned pregnancy. Bless the staff, the volunteers, and the benefactors who have so generously given of their time, talent, and treasure to help these women and their unborn children be given the gift of life. Lord, strengthen our resolve to carry on for the next 25 years or for as long as the need remains. We do trust in your loving care. We pray all of this in your holy name.  Amen.
