An Unplanned Problem
An Unplanned Problem
By Jim Sharbaugh, founding Executive Director of Gabriel Network
One expectant mother’s thoughts as she realizes she is pregnant.
“This happens to other women, not me! I’m going to school; what’s going to happen with that? And what about work? I might lose my job. Oh no, I never thought this would happen to me!”
“Maybe the test is wrong! Maybe I’m just late! I need someone to talk too. Who? My mom? No, she’ll be so angry. One of my girlfriends? Oh God, what are they going to think of me? My boyfriend? Oh no! Now he’s a father! Will he be there for me . . . for us? Does he love me? Do I love him? Oh no, I never thought this would happen to me!”
“I can’t do this! This is too much! There has got to be a way to fix this.”
“I’m so afraid! Maybe an abortion would fix this. That’s okay, isn’t it? After all, it’s legal; it must be okay. I wonder what it costs? Who would go with me? Why does it feel wrong? It’s just a normal medical procedure to help women, right? Right? I feel so lonely. I want my pregnancy to go away. I’ve never been this afraid!”
“I never thought this would happen to me!
Who will help me now?”
Fear is an insidious force. Fear can drive the best of us to think in a way contrary to our normal beliefs and values. Fear can make anyone helpless within their own confused thoughts, vulnerable to outside pressure. Fear can drive a new mother, who has just learned of the new life growing within her, to treat that life as a problem to be solved, instead of a precious Gift. Meanwhile, the unknowing, tiny, hidden, precious human life within his mother’s womb continues his miraculous development, unaware of the crisis unfolding “outside.”
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, fear drives women and men to seek immediate relief from what they perceive to be a problem; a problem to be fixed and then forgotten. Sadly, fearfully, an unplanned gift of life is put in great danger. Father, take away our stoney hearts and give us natural hearts. Renew your Spirit within us. Ezekiel 36:26. Bless every mother and father who experiences your gift of life through the oppressive cloud of fear. Bless all those who tirelessly work to lift that cloud with hope, especially the Angel Friends and staff of the Gabriel Network. Help us to be your face to every mother who is alone and afraid. We pray this in the Name of Jesus, who is one with You, Father, and the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. Amen! Alleluia!
