An Unplanned Gift

By Archbishop William Lori, Archbishop of Baltimore

It has been a very long journey, one that, at times, seemed impossible to make.  However, what began with fear, confusion, and anxiety, has now given way to feelings of joy, gratitude, and love like she has never experienced before.  The negative influences in her life and the resistance and even abandonment by others have been replaced with the loving support of a community of faith.

Now, she and her baby are accepted and loved.  She is surrounded by people who love her, support her, and pray for her and her child.  But most of all, she now feels and understands that God loves her with a love beyond all telling.  She knows that God’s love is unconditional and that his love is manifested in her newborn baby.  If her love for her child is this strong, she thinks, how much more does God love her!

These words of Isaiah the prophet carry new meaning, “Thus says the Lord: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name: you are mine.  When you pass through waters, I will be with you; through rivers, you shall not be swept away.  When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, nor will flames consume you.  For I, the LORD, am your God, the Holy One of Israel, your savior…You are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you.” (Isaiah 43:1-4)

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank you for the precious gift of life, and for the love and care you shower upon me.  I commend to you all those who are dear to me that you may strengthen, support, and guide them in the ways of your love.  Most of all, I thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, who, out of complete love for me, suffered, died, and rose to redeem me from my sins so that I may have everlasting life with you.  Help me to love you above all things.  Amen.
